"but degusting sounds... well... disgusting"
It's interesting how similar or rhyming words are often (inappropriately) associated with each other. It does not help when people skim-read or mis-spell words. So, let's just get this straight right now. To degust is to carefully or delicately taste, or to sample flavours carefully, to savour them. Sure we can eat and chew and taste and swallow, but they sound a bit, well, boring - and hardly do masterful culinary creations justice.
"I ordered 'the crustacean', but received a 'degustation'.. "
Excuse me for my corniest dad-joke, but if you're trying out a new restaurant and want to sample the chef's best dishes, why would you order one starter, one main and one dessert? Madness. Instead, order the degustation - (wine matched if you're religiously allowed and don't have to drive), and let the professionals do their thing - at least 8 times or more - to take you on a tasting journey through their food Disneyland.
We love it when food can be THE night out, not just the thing you do before you go out for the night. When a bowl of noodles served on the side of the road in Hoi An gives as much pleasure and fond memories as a meal at a multi-chef's hat restaurant, you know there is more to eating than just filling your tummy...
I hope you enjoy reading about our food experiences as much as we enjoyed having them, photographing them, and writing about them!
